BEHIND THE LAUGHS

WHO ARE WE?

We are a group of 2nd Batxillerat students working on a project to fight gender violence. Our goal is to educate people, challenge harmful stereotypes, and promote equality. Through research, campaigns, and community activities, we want to raise awareness and encourage conversations to help create a safer and fairer society.

OUR CAMPAIGN

Gender violence is not just physical—it manifests in many ways, including verbal violence, emotional abuse, and constant discrimination. Many harmful behaviors have been normalized, especially in the form of everyday comments directed at women. Our mission is to highlight how these words contribute to a culture of gender inequality and violence. Through our campaign, we try to change perspectives, encourage self-reflection, and spark conversations that lead to real change.

OUR LOGO

This logo represents how sexist jokes can hurt women. In the center, there’s a young woman which covers her face and raises her hands to protect herself from the laughs and the verbal abuse. The words "JUST A JOKE" around the image reminds us that many sexist comments are excused as jokes. But these jokes are not harmless as they make fun of women and make them feel inferior.

THE POSTER

Gender violence also happens through the words people say every day. Many comments directed at women may seem small or like “just jokes,” but they join gender violence. Phrases like “Women are too emotional,” “You should smile more,” or “That’s not a job for a woman” might seem harmless, but they make women feel less valued and allow harmful attitudes to continue.

Words have power. The way we speak about and to women affects how they are treated in society. Ignoring sexist comments allows discrimination to grow, but standing up against them helps create change. This poster is here to make people stop and think. It asks you to recognize that words can hurt and to be aware of how everyday language contributes to gender violence.

In our poster can be seen two different situations, one which seems harmless coloured in different blues and the other in various types of red. The first one (the upper one) wants to portrait a scene where no evil can be seen, with two guys laughing at a joke one of them has just said, even though its naïve appearance a dark truth is hidden beneath, which is portrayed in the lower image, with one of the two guys as an adult committing gender-based violence against its girlfriend.

Our poster wants to depict the many sexist comments that are said under the shoulder of the phrase: “its just a joke”, no it’s not. Behind every joke, every comment our true opinion, our real identity, feelings, actions hide in it. Thus, these sexist behaviours must stop as for our society to reach a final and fair equality, but first every manor woman must understand our message: “there’s a bit of truth in every joke”.
